What your body is doing while you sleep
Sleep is not a single state. It is a cycle of stages, from light sleep to deep slow-wave sleep to REM - that the body moves through several times across the night. Each transition requires a specific set of physiological conditions. The most important of those conditions is temperature.
At sleep onset, the body must drop its core temperature by approximately one to two degrees Celsius. This drop is the trigger. It signals the brain to release melatonin, the hormone that initiates and sustains deep sleep. Without it, the body cannot complete the transition from wakefulness to restorative rest. It hovers at the surface, present but not sleeping, resting but not restoring.
This is the woman who wakes at 2am. Her body completed the initial temperature drop, entered sleep, and then as the night's thermal cycle shifted, could not maintain the conditions it needed. What Shawn Stevenson says about it
In Sleep Smarter, one of the most widely read sleep science books of the last decade, Shawn Stevenson addresses sleepwear directly. What you wear to bed affects your core temperature, your melatonin production, your cortisol levels, and the depth of sleep you are able to reach. He identifies three biological mechanisms:
- Thermoregulation. Synthetic fabrics trap heat, artificially elevate core temperature, and disrupt the melatonin release that deep sleep requires. The body cannot cool as it needs to. The result is the 2am waking, the shallow surface sleep, the morning that never quite arrives feeling rested.
- Cortisol. Sleeping too hot triggers a mild stress response. Cortisol remains elevated through the night, keeping the heart rate slightly raised and preventing the body from entering the deep restorative phases where repair, consolidation and recovery happen. The woman who wakes damp is not just hot. She has been mildly stressed by her own body temperature for hours. Moisture-wicking fabric breaks this cycle - drawing sweat away from the skin to the outer surface where it evaporates, keeping the microclimate dry and regulated, reducing the cortisol spike that heat and moisture together trigger.

Research now directly links impaired glymphatic function to the accumulation of proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease. Anything that prevents deep sleep impairs this process.
